Judy was 59 when I photographed her.
It was a long time coming, since I had first met her 1 ½ years earlier. We were introduced by a mutual friend at a networking event, and I had always gotten the impression that Judy loved my work and would eventually call me up for a shoot. Well, 30 Days of Gorgeous came around and Judy wanted to be a part of it. She was about to turn 60 and wanted to do something special for this milestone. And, she is glad she did. As soon as she got home with her beautiful new photos, she took to Facebook to share her joy:
“I can’t stop looking at them!”
“I keep marveling at how beautifully I was captured by her… Throughout the shoot Laurie made me feel at ease while she provided guidance on what to do.”
Yaaassss! THIS is the feeling I want you to have when the whole experience is over. This is my “why”.
But I digress. Let me tell you a bit more about Judy and what brought her to me.
Judy is ANYTHING but boring.
This is a woman born to a World War II vet and a legal secretary in the community of Lakeview here in Calgary. She always excelled at school and was bitten by the travel bug early in life. She married her highschool sweetheart and they had two sons together before moving to Colombia on an expatriate assignment. She felt reborn at 40, got a divorce and married her young Colombian lover. At 44 she had a 3rd son and this is when she met my friend, Carrie! They bonded instantly having newborns over 40 and they have maintained their friendship ever since. It was Carrie who introduced me to Judy at that networking event!
Now Judy is at a whole new stage of life. She had great careers working as a travel agent and accountant, but she realized after her second divorce that entrepreneurship was her thing. She owns a franchise called Liquid Capital and she helps Alberta business owners with working capital financing. She is working on her personal development constantly and is a dedicated and proud mom to her growing sons. She likes to live on the edge and is ready for love again.
“There’s gotta be a guy out there who will love me the way I need to be loved!”.
“Gorgeous comes in an array of shapes, sizes, colours ... and ages! As a woman turning 60 this year I feel more gorgeous than I’ve ever felt. And according to my friends, I look pretty darn good, too! I am open to new experiences and by participating in the 30 Days of Gorgeous, I believe I will be able to contribute as a woman who has lived a pretty full life already - and yet, is continuing the journey. I sometimes see that women my age feel they’ve reached their pinnacle and are content (or not, but do it anyway) to live like their best years are behind them. As for me, I’m living life full on! (Well, except maybe for the adorable and adoring life partner piece! Watch out, though! It’s a 2018 initiative to find / attract him!!).”
Judy is ultra-positive and energetic. She is grateful to have had the opportunities that were available to her generation and feels like she can be anyone or do anything she wants. The world is her oyster! Her latest aspiration? Modelling! Yes, at age 60 she knows she is still a knock-out and she is fearlessly pursuing her dream. She also plans to learn a musical instrument, write a memoir and travel to the Galapagos and Africa before the animals are gone. She is showing no signs of slowing down, and it’s the most beautiful thing about her. I am so grateful to have gotten to share this milestone with Judy. Here’s to 60 and beyond, Judy – may this decade be full of new adventures that take you to new places and new loves.
