A little while ago, I shared a blog post on my Facebook page that struck a chord with me. It was entitled "Dear Men, Take The Photo". Written by Sophie Cachia (The Young Mummy), it basically addressed the issue of men not picking up the camera enough. As moms, we love capturing every moment in our babies' lives, especially those sweet interactions between them and their daddy. But, so many of us look back over our carefully scrapbooked lives to realize that we are missing!
We send the men in our lives mixed messages. As women, we often try to hide from the camera because we feel like we don't look good enough. We say "No photos! I'm in my bathrobe/I have no makeup on/My hair is a mess!". You know what I'm talking about. Eventually, our spouses take the hint, and they stop picking up the camera. The thing is, we actually want the pictures. We may not realize it at the time, but if you read my previous blog post The Missing Years, you will get what I'm talking about.
In my case, I feel like it was my fault. I told my husband NOT to take pictures of me, so he listened. What I meant, of course, was for him to stop taking BAD pictures of me. I mean, when I'm all dressed up for a Christmas party, not a single camera will come out. But, lying on the sofa with a messy bun and popcorn crumbs all over my shirt? Oh yeah.
At some point, I realized my error, and decided that since I caused the problem, I needed to fix it! Quite simply, I ask. I say "Hey, look at our vacation pictures so far... looks like I'm not ON this vacation. Can you maybe take some photos that I'm in?". Slowly, but surely, he is taking the hint. I sometimes don't need to ask anymore. And for my part, I try to not care how I look. I'm just happy to be in the picture. Now, whether or not he's allowed to post those popcorn crumb photos to Facebook.... Baby steps.
So, Men, I would like to add to Young Mummy's request. Don't just take the GD photo. Go a step further. The mother of your children needs to remember that she is still the most beautiful person you have ever seen. Treat her to a Modern Glamour session, like this one below. She will have her hair and makeup professionally done and I will take the most beautiful pictures of her that she has ever seen. She will have a folio box of prints that will remind her of the best gift she ever received.
And, to the moms reading this? Share this and tag your husband. No more subtle hints!
