I recently had the opportunity to attend a "Location Lighting Workshop" with photojournalist, Rick Friedman, here in Calgary. Rick has been photographing famous people for over thirty years and was gracious enough to share some of his secrets with us. Check out his website.
We were a group of about twenty-five people, ranging in ages and photographic experience. This was a completely hands-on workshop where we got to work with three amazing models: Alice, Amrit and Chris. We posed them on our own, adjusted lighting and chose our own angles and lenses. We basically started with a concept and then took it from there. One of the things I enjoyed the most was seeing how the other photographers interacted with the models and posed them. There are so many ways to arrive at a good photograph, so it was cool to be a fly on the wall to see how another photographer works towards their vision. I got more out of the day than I expected. Friendships were formed, and we were still hanging out long after the workshop ended.
Here are some of my images that I captured from that day.
