Last year was the first time that our family dressed up for Hallowe'en with a common theme. It was inspired by my youngest son, who is completely obsessed with Super Mario Brothers. He decided that he should be Mario, and the rest of us should be the supporting cast. Great idea! His costume is the best because it comes with a pillow insert to give him a round little belly. Luigi, on the other hand, is tall and thin, so it made sense for our oldest son to be him. By default, and availability of costume sizes, our middle son became Toad. He is difficult to dress in Hallowe'en costumes because he has autism and would not easily put up with a fake mustache or a lot of extraneous gear. So, Toad was probably the least offensive option for him.
Being the only female in the house, it was a no-brainer that I would be Princess Peach. It just so happens that Peach is my favourite character to choose when I play Mario Kart. She is super fast on a bike! I was unimpressed by the over-priced pre-made costume at the store so, for my own costume, I had some DIY work to do. I made my own dress and used some blue nail polish to make some cheap second-hand jewelry look like it came from the Princess Peach collection. The crown and gloves were all I ended up buying from the costume store. In the end, I think the extra work was worth it!
I took the initiative to buy my husband the Yoshi costume. He would definitely end up with our Mario or Toad on his shoulders when we went trick-or-treating, so it would look perfect for them to be riding Yoshi! However, he had other ideas and really insisted on being Bowser. Seriously, he is my fourth and most difficult child!
Hallowe'en night was perfect. The weather was mild, no need to cover our costumes with winter coats and toques! And to top off our Super Mario Brothers theme, we carried around a speaker playing some classic Super Mario tunes! Thank you to my creative Bowser for that idea. I forgive you for not being Yoshi....
Of course, I couldn't resist capturing our Super Mario Brothers family in a photo. I had recently painted a pink backdrop that would be perfect! I absolutely love how it turned out! Do you love making costumes for Hallowe'en? I would love to hear about it! Even better, contact me to capture your unique creations in a custom session!
